In this talk I will present calculations for the combined emission of GWs from a population of young rapidly rotating neutron stars throughout the universe producing a stochastic background of GWs. In particular I will consider GW emission due to the f-mode instability which can be excited in newly formed neutron stars. The stochastic background due to binary neutron star systems which have merged to form a supermassive neutron star will also be presented. The detectability of the background with current and future GW detectors and the implications of its detection (or non-detection) will be explained.
