Almost no-one thinks that they are unconsciously biased against the opposite sex – or their own. Physics is close to the bottom of the ‘league table ‘ for attracting women into Physics. What are we doing wrong? We are all prone to Unconscious bias because of what has been termed ‘fast thinking’ .
Research shows that ‘fast thinking’ leads people to poor decision making and this, in the academic context, reduces research outcomes, affects promotion success rates and also impacts badly on student satisfaction survey results.
This presentation will explain how to recognise the poor decisions that come from ‘fast thinking’ which results in our falling prey to unconscious bias – and how to combat it.
