Title: Galaxy Zoo: star formation vs. spiral arm number
Abstract:
In this talk, I will discuss recent results comparing star formation properties in galaxies with respect to the number of spiral arms they have. I compare the star formation rates, gas fractions and levels of dust obscuration in a sample of low-redshift SDSS spirals, with morphological classifications from Galaxy Zoo. I find that star formation rates are similar in all spiral galaxies, irrespective of arm number, but there is more dust obscured star formation in two-arm, grand design spirals.
