Abstract: We are exploring how machine learning can be used to improve the search for gravitational waves. Gravitational waves from cosmic events, such as binary black hole mergers, are very quiet and hard to distinguish from the noise in our detectors. The standard procedures used to extract the gravitational wave signals from the data are both time-consuming and computationally costly. Neural networks have been used to address these issues so that template banks can now be generated in the order of seconds rather than weeks! In my talk, I will briefly look at my journey so far, give an overview of neural networks, explore how we identify gravitational waves, and then finish on how I am using neural networks to improve the gravitational wave search. Come along if you want to find out more and I look forward to seeing you there!
