Speaker: Dr James Trayford
Title: Sonification
Abstract: I will provide some introduction to the practice of ”sonification” – conveying physical data via sound – and how it differs from “audification”. The approach is motivated both as a means of making astronomy accessible for those who are visually impaired, but also to enhance visualisations and convey information that visualisation alone cannot. I will discuss existing approaches and ways in which we might develop more sophisticated techniques, along with the in-development STRAUSS code, designed to make musical sonification straightforward for astronomical data and beyond. Finally I will preview some examples in-development for the first planetarium show for blind & visually impaired children.
