In 2015, we made the first detection of gravitational waves from the merger of two black holes, each around thirty solar masses. I’ll talk about the first few detections, then talk about the future. What can we learn about the mass and spin distributions of compact binaries? Can we infer where, when, and how they form? How do we miss as few as possible? I'll discuss this in the context of two themes of my research: detector characterization, and searches for spinning, precessing binaries.
