The University of Portsmouth has announced a major new investment in
additional PhD bursaries for 2015 across a number of departments
including the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (ICG).

We are particular keen to received applications from candidates interested in computational astrophysics in support of Dr. Daniel Whalen, whose interests lie in the formation of the first objects in the universe. Students will help develop supercomputer models of the formation of the first stars and primitive galaxies at the epoch of first light, which will soon be probed by JWST, WFIRST and thirty-meter telescopes such as the ELT. They will also develop numerical simulations of the formation of supermassive black hole seeds to determine the gravitational wave, thermal neutrino and near infrared (NIR) signatures of the first quasar born 500 Myr after the big bang. There may also be opportunities to model the first supernovae in the Universe.
Applications are only open to EU students, though we will consider non-EU students for self-funded PhD positions.
