The Portsmouth Business School, in collaboration with ICG is looking to appoint a software developer to work on a research project looking at commercialisation of crowdsourcing platforms which has been funded by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB). The successful applicant will be appointed on a Senior Research Associate contract. The project is for 18 months collaboration between Portsmouth Business School and the Faculty of Technology’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at the University of Portsmouth (UoP), as well as Remote Sensing Applications Consultants Ltd (RSACL) and Hampshire County Council (HCC).
The primary responsibility of the post-holder will be to lead on the development of an online crowdsourcing platform to measure changes in land use in Hampshire. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a strong level of compentence and experience in the design, coding and maintainance of web-based platforms, ideally with specific knowledge or experience of crowdsourcing and/or citizen science projects. Among a range of other requirements, the platform requires a user interface, integratrion with external datasources (including an image bank), discussion forum and a mechanism for taking raw input data supplied by users and converting into accurate and meaningful results.
This project builds upon existing expertise at the University of Portsmouth based on involvement in citizen science crowdsourcing projects such as Galaxy Zoo and the Zooniverse, as well as an ongoing programme of EPSRC-funded research investigating user motivations and behaviours in crowdsourcing projects.
An additional requirement of the position will be undertaking market research into other suitable companies (especially small-medium enterprises) that could partner with UoP for similar funded grants or paid knowledge-service work in the future. The successful candidate should also have the appropriate skill-set and confidence to undertake such research and approach suitable candidates to discuss potential partnerships as opportunities arise.
The anticipated start date will be 1 November 2014, or as soon as possible after this.
